Women's Basketball Outlasts New Hampshire in Overtime

Durham, N.H. -- Ashia McCalla (Grrenbelt, Md.) scored a game-high 18 points prior to fouling out late in the 2nd half and KK White (Indianapolis, Ind.) added 11 points as the UMBC Women's Basketball team came away with a wild, 62-57, overtime victory at New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened:
  • After New Hampshire (5-13, 0-6 AE) scored off the opening tip, UMBC (8-10, 5-2 AE) scored the next 11 points to take an 11-2 lead.
  • The Wildcats would cut it to 13-8, but Carmen Yánez (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain) hit a late three, followed by McCalla hitting a buzzer-beating three to give the Retrievers a 19-8 lead after a quarter.
  • UMBC's big run continued into the second as they took a game-high 18 point lead at 26-8 when Riley Donahue (Atlanta, Ga.) hit a three with 6:32 left in the half.
  • UNH would chip away at the lead and UMBC's lead would be just 12, 30-18, at the break
  • Both teams went ice cold in the third quarter, as they shot a combined 7-25 from the field, but the Retrievers still held a 39-29 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • The Wildcats would quickly shave the deficit to six, but McCalla got a fastbreak layup and Kiara Bell (Santa Rosa, Calif.) hit a pair of free throws to push the lead back to 10.
  • UMBC's lead was 49-39 until UNH hit its first three-pointer of the game to cut the lead to 49-42 with 2:26 left.
  • The Wildcats would then hit another three to make it 49-45 with just 56 seconds left, but Laycee Drake (Hancock, N.Y.) hit a pair of free throws with 34 seconds left to make it 51-45.
  • UNH then hit another three, stole the inbounds pass and drained to free throws to cut UMBC lead to 51-50 with 25 seconds left
  • Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass) split a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left to make it 52-50, McCalla fouled out on a three-point shot attempt and UNH would hit all three free throws to take a 53-52 lead, its first lead since 2-0, with 11 seconds left
  • Scoop Smith (Pemberton Township, N.J.) got fouled with two seconds left and split the free throws to tie the game and send it to overtime
  • KK White gave the Retrievers the lead right away in overtime when the opening tip went right to her and she raced for an uncontested layup.
  • After the Wildcats tied it up, Bell and Drake each hit a shot to make it a 59-55 game with 1:40 left
  • Once again, UNH would answer with a layup, but Bell would ger her own offensive rebound, get fouled and split the free throws with 50 seconds left to push the lead to 60-57
  • The UMBC defens would not allow a point the rest of the way, as they hit a pair of free throws to take the game, 62-57
  • Bell finished with nine points and a game-best 10 rebounds, while Drake added four points, six rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block
