Women's Soccer Battles GW to 1-1 Draw in D.C.

Meghan McKye nets UMBC's goal and Morgan McGruder stops a late PK to preserve the draw.

Video Highlights

Washington, D.C. – UMBC junior Meghan McKye (Toronto, Ont.) scored a game-tying goal late in the first half and senior goalkeeper Morgan McGruder (Overland Park, Kan.) made seven saves, including a penalty kick rejection as the Retrievers and host George Washington played to a 1-1 draw at GW Soccer Field.
The game was the opening contest for both squads.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the 11', a UMBC defensive miscue ended up as a 2-on-1 for GW, but McGruder made the save on a shot from the right wing.
  • McKye's first header of the game sailed just over crossbar in the 16'.
  • The Retrievers were unlucky on the GW goal in the 26', as a GW shot off the foot of Rachel Sorkenn from the top of the box careened off a Retriever defender and into the net.
  • But UMBC would knot the score in the 42', on a perfectly executed corner kick. Newcomer Lola Negrete's in-swinger from the left corner found McKye, who headed it into the net from five yards away.
  • McGruder made a diving save in the 75' to keep the game knotted at 1-1 and four more in the final 10 minutes to preserve the draw for the visitors.
  • GW was awarded a penalty kick in the 86', but McGruder moved just to her right and made a kick save.

NOTES
  • The goal was the second of McKye's career and her first since the notching a game-winning goal at NJIT in the spring of 2021.
  • McGruder has now made seven or more saves in five of her 11 career contests, including three of the last four.
  • The Retrievers snapped a four-game slide to GW with the draw.
