Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) hit a one-out RBI single to left in the bottom of the eighth to break a scoreless tie and give the UMBC Softball team a 1-0 walk-off victory over fourth-seeded Binghamton on Thursday.
Courtney Coppersmtih (York, Pa.) struck out an America East Tournament record 16 and allowed just one hit (in the first inning) to pick up the victory in the circle. She also got the game-winning rally started in the bottom of the eighth when she reached on an error.
Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) then singled and pinch-runner Jadeyn McKeon (Stewartstown, Pa.) went to third when the throw back into the infield went awry. Hawker then laced a shard single to left ot score McKeon and win the game.
Pierce was the only player in the game with multiple hits as she went 2-for-4.
Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.),
Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) and
Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) also had hits for UMBC (29-10).
The Retrievers will face the winner of No.2 UAlbany-No.3 UMass Lowell on Friday morning at 11 a.m.
Earlier in the day, Coppersmith and Pierce were named to the 2021-22 Academic All-District® Softball Team, selected by CoSIDA. This team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
As First-team Academic All-District® honorees, they advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in June.
Coppersmith has a 3.73 GPA in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, while Pierce is a Graphic Design/Media & Communications Studies double major with a 3.63 GPA
