Women's Basketball Goes North for a Pair of Games at Maine

The UMBC Women's Basketball team continues its battle for the America East Playoffs when it plays a pair of games at Maine this weekend. Saturday's game will be played on Maine's Orono campus at The Pit in Memorial Gymnasium, while Sunday's matchup will be played at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. Both games tip-off at 1 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.

Scouting the Retrievers:

  • UMBC women's basketball cut a 20-point third quarter deficit to one point late in the final minute of play, but fell, 74-71, to visiting Hartford at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Wednesday
  • Graduate student guard Jatarrikah Settle (Frederick, Md.) had a chance to tie the score at 72-all, but rimmed out the second of two free throws with 13.1 seconds left. Hartford snared the rebound, broke UMBC's press and hit a layup with 5.5 seconds remaining. Graduate student guard Danae Marquez' (Fresno, Calif.) 30-footer just before the buzzer was partially blocked and fell short of the basket.
  • Junior guard Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass.) added 15 points and graduate student forward Onome-Juliet Esadah (Warri, Delta State, Nigeria) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
  • UMBC trailed, 56-36, midway through third quarter

Scouting the Black Bears

  • The Maine women's basketball team earned its 10th-straight win and moved to 9-0 on the road in conference play with a 49-45 victory at UAlbany on Wednesday.
  • The win clinched the top seed in the America East playoffs for the Black Bears. It marks the fourth time in the past five seasons in which Maine will enter the postseason tournament as the top seed.
  • Anne Simon tallied 13 points to extended her double-digit scoring streak to 18 in a row.
  • Paula Gallego added a career-high 13 points behind three three-pointers
  • Maine held its ninth opponent of the season under 50 points while forcing the Great Danes into 22 turnovers (with 16 steals).
  • The Black Bears have now forced 20+ turnovers in each of their last three outings.

All-Time Series

  • Maine leads the all-time series, 22-13, having won 13 of the last 15 meetings.
  • The teams last met in 2020, with the road team winning each contest. UMBC won 74-54 in Bangor on 1/26/20, but Maine got revenge on 2/29/20 with a 66-54 win in Baltimore.
