Softball Welcomes Coppin State and Georgetown to The Diamond

The UMBC Softball team returns to The Diamond at UMBC for the first time since its America East championship victory in May, when it hosts Coppin State and Georgetown for a tournament this weekend. 

The Retrievers face Coppin at 11 a.m. on Saturday followed by a matchup with Georgetown immediately after. The Retrievers and Hoyas will then kick-off Sunday action at 10 a.m. before UMBC and CSU play at noon.

Scouting the Retrievers
  • UMBC went 1-3 last weekend in tournament against Seton Hall and Saint Joseph's played at CCBC Catonsville
  • The Retrievers have five players batting over .300, with Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) batting a team-best .400 with four hits.
  • Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) has a team-high five hits, while Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) leads the team in slugging (.875) and total bases (7) and is tied for the team lead in homers (1) and RBI (3).
  • On Sunday, UMBC scored six runs in the fifth inning and junior Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief as the Retrievers knocked off St. Joseph's, 6-1, to earn their first victory of the season.
Scouting the Eagles
  • Coppin State opened its season this past Monday, falling 10-2 in five innings against Iowa State at Nationals Youth Academy in Washington D.C.
  • After the Cyclones took a 1-0 lead in the first, Coppin responded with two runs in the second. 
  • Avianna Peterson led off the frame with a double in her first plate appearance with CSU and later advanced on an Alexis Genovese single before scoring on Desiree Carrizosa's groundout to second tie the score. 
  • Genovese later scored on a groundout from Brissa Alvarado to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.
  • The Cyclones came right back with six runs in the bottom of the second
  • Vanessa Carrizosa received the loss, striking out a pair in her lone inning of work.  Shawnee Ronyak allowed just three runs over the final 3.1 innings on three hits while striking out three. 
Scouting the Hoyas
  • Georgetown enters play at 4-6 after playing in tournaments in South Carolina the first two weeks of the season
  • Senior Alyssa Chavez leads the team in average (.414), hits (12), homers (2), RBI (10) and total bases (19).
  • Georgetown's four player pitching staff is entirely freshman, and is anchored by Kayla Dunn who is 3-0 with a 2.53 ERA.
