BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Softball team blasted three homers on the opening day of the season, but dropped both contests. Seton Hall defeated UMBC 13-7 in the opener, and Saint Joseph's took the second game, 9-1.
Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.),
Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) and
Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) homered for the Retrievers.
Stott hit a three run homer in the first game to account for her three RBI, while Coppersmith hit a two-run bomb for her two RBI. Coppersmith and Lonchar each drew a pair of walks on the day as well. Fifth year outfielderÂ
Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) drove in a run on a pair of hits, while classmate
Anna Lonchar also had two hits on the day. Dempsey hit a solo homer in game two to give UMBC a 1-0 lead.
Freshman
Zoe Russell (Roxboro, N.C.) picked up her first career hit, while classmate
Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) was oslid in her debut, allowing just four earned runs and striking out four.
UMBC will face SJU at 10 am tomorrow followed by a rematch with SHU at noon,. The games will once again be played at CCBC Catonsville.
