Women's Lacrosse Visits American on Saturday

The Retrievers and Eagles will battle for the 19th time since 2001

The UMBC women's lacrosse team (1-1) heads to the nation's capital to take on the American Eagles (0-1) on Saturday, Feb. 19. The opening draw takes place at 1:00 p.m. on the turf of the Jacobs Recreational Complex. 
 
After cruising to an opening 21-3 victory over Longwood on February 12, the Retrievers lost a heartbreaking 10-9 decision at Mount St. Mary's on February 16. Neither team led by more than a goal over the last 24 minutes and the hosts scored the game-winner with 46 seconds remaining.  
 
Sophomore Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) and junior Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep) each posted their second hat tricks of the season to lead UMBC. Gerow has a team-high nine goals and one assist through two games. 
 
UMBC has attempted 23 free position shots in two games, scoring on a dozen, while only allowing two goals on six free position attempts for their foes. 
 
Honored 
 
  • UMBC women's lacrosse picked up two of the three weekly awards with Gerow and red-shirt freshman Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) earning Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week respectively. Gerow was a three-time America East Rookie of the Week selection in 2021 and also captured  America East Offensive Player of the Week honors for the week ending April 19. She became the first America East player since 2016 to win both Offensive and Rookie of the Week honors. 
 
A Look At The Eagles 
 
  • The Eagles enter Saturday's game at 0-1 after a 20-8 defeat at Georgetown on Feb. 12.
 
  • Both the Eagles and Hoyas started out strong in the first quarter, with the Hoyas holding a one-goal  advantage at 6-5. However, the Hoyas kept the lead throughout the game and . American only managed three goals in the final 45 minutes. 
 
  • American finished their 2021 season with an overall record of 1-7. Their season was cut short with a lot of games being canceled due to Covid-19.
 
  • Emma Vinall recorded a team-best four goals versus Georgetown.  
 
A Glance at the Series 
 
  • Since 2001, the Retrievers have faced off against the Eagles 18 times, winning 17 and only falling short once. The Retrievers have a winning streak of fifteen against American. 
 
  • The last time these two faced off was on February 13, 2019, with the game being extremely close. The Retrievers won by one goal, 9-8. Both teams battled for the win, with the Eagles taking an early lead of 2-1. The game proceeded to overtime and UMBC's Grayson Corbett tallied the "golden goal".
