Volleyball Season Concludes in NCAA Tournament First Round at Penn State

University Park, PA. – The UMBC Volleyball team's incredible 2022 season came to a close on Friday night against No.11 Penn State (25-14, 25-17, 25-12)

The Retrievers finished the season 17-9 and won their third-straight America East title as well a third-consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament.

How It Happened:
  • Penn State (25-7)  jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead. After a timeout, UMBC cut the lead to 7-4, but the Nittany Lions went on a run to eventually put the set away.
  • The second set started similar to the first, as the Retrievers fell behind 6-1, but would go on a big run to eventually cut the lead to 10-7 and 13-10, but the hosts would again go on a run to take the set
  • Kills by Michela De Marzi (Milan, Italy) and Kamani Conteh (New Castle, Del.) gave UMBC an early 3-1 lead in the third, but PSU responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead for good.

Conteh paced the Retrievers offense with six kills, De Marzi added four on .273 hitting.

Aysia Miller (Mililani, Hawaii) finished with a team-high nine digs, while Serin Maden (Ankara, Turkey) added a team-best 13 assists

Weronika Wrzesinska (Frednowy, Poland) had four kills, Mila Ilieva (Vidin, Bulgaria) tallied three kills and Mia Bilusic (Zagreb, Croatia) added five kills of her own.

Bird Alford (Tallahassee, Fla) picked up five assists and a kill in the effort. 

Kayla Tomas (Silver Spring, Md.) made her final career appearance in the match.
