Women's Basketball Continues Road Trip at Lafayette

The UMBC Women's Basketball returns from a 10-day break when it travels to Lafayette (1-6) for a 6 p.m. match on Wednesday. Fans can catch all the action on ESPN+. The tilt will be the second of five-straight on the road for the team.

Graduate student forward Kiara Bell (Santa Rosa, Calif.) was named the America East Player of the Week last week after she averaged 15.0 points and 8.5 rebounds, three blocks per game and 2.5 steals per game in a 1-1 week.

She capped her week with a career-high 22 points on 10-13 shooting with nine rebounds (six offensive), three steals and two blocks in a win at St. Francis Brooklyn.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Retrievers edged host St. Francis-Brooklyn, 64-59, in the final intercollegiate contest at famed Pope Physical Education Center. 
  • KK White added 12 points for UMBC (2-3), which snapped a three-game slide.
  • The Terriers held a 51-49 lead with 7:07 remaining when Bell converted a layup. After a Terrier miss, Nia Staples drained a trey on a fast break to give the visitors a 54-51 lead with 5:48 remaining.
  • The hosts would tie the score at 54-all, but White hit a fast-break layup with 2:52 remaining and after two empty possessions by both teams, White scored inside again to give UMBC a 58-54 with 78 seconds to play.
  • The Terriers hit a trey, but on UMBC's ensuing possession, they pulled down two offensive rebounds and Bell hit a layup with 29 seconds on the clock to push the lead to 60-57.
  • Bell came down with her final rebound of the game on the next St. Francis effort. White and Bell hit all four free throw attempts in the final three seconds to secure the victory.
SCOUTING THE LEOPARDS
  • Marist pulled away on a 10-2 run at the beginning of the third quarter to beat Lafayette, 52-42, on Sunday afternoon.
  • It was the fifth-straight loss for the Leopards
  • Lafayette's only win of the season came on the road against UMBC's America East rival NJIT on November 11  
  • Sophomore Halee Smith led the Leopards with 11 points, going 4-for-9 from the floor. Fellow sophomore Abby Antognoli and junior Makayla Andrews joined her in double digits, adding 10 apiece. 
  • Andrews leads the team in scoring (13.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 ppg).
  • Jessica Booth is setting up her teammates well, averaging 2.7 assists per game.
