Volleyball Advances to America Championship After Defeating Bryant in Four Sets

Vestal, N.Y. – The UMBC Volleyball team dropped the first set, but then dominated the next three to defeat third-seeded Byant (18-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-14) in the America East Semifinals on Saturday. The win propels the Retrievers to their third-consecutive America East Championship Game appearance.

UMBC (16-8, 7-3 AE) will face fourth-seeded New Hampshire (19-9, 6-4 AE), who swept regular season champion and host Binghamton (17-8, 8-2 AE) earlier in the day, at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UMBC took an early 11-9 lead, but Bryant (19-12, 6-4 AE) would go on a 4-0 run to retake the lead and eventually pull away for a 25-18 victory
  • The Bulldogs led most of the early part of the second set, but UMBC would score five in a row to turn a 12-8 deficit into a 13-12 lead.
  • With the set tied at 16, UMBC would go on a 4-0 run to take a 20-16 lead and never look back en route to the set victory.
  • The Retrievers started the third set on fire, jumping out to a 16-5 lead. The lead would balloon to as much as 15 before a late Bryant run cut into it, but UMBC scored the final two points to take the set and go up 2-1.
  • With the fourth set tied at five, the Retrievers scored three straight to take the lead for good. The Bulldogs would keep within striking distance, trailing 17-13, but UMBC would score the next seven points to take control and eventually win.

Mila Ilieva (Vidin, Bulgaria) was superb for the Retrievers, finishing with 11 kills on .500 hitting and seven blocks. Kamani Conteh (New Castle, Del.) had a game-high 14 kills, while Michela De Marzi (Milan, Italy) had a match-best nine blocks.
