Women's Basketball Drops 64-57 Decision to Richmond

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Women's Basketball team had the ball down three with under 25 seconds left, but could not complete a late comeback as it fell to visiting Richmond, 64-57, on Thursday night at The Peake.

UMBC (1-3) was once again paced on offense by Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass) who finished with a team-best 13 points to go along with a career-high six assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Retrievers started off on fire, hitting four threes in the first quarter and took an 18-17 lead after the opening frame thanks to a last-second put-back by Scoop Smith (Pemberton Township, N.J.).
  • Richmond (3-1) went on a 7-0 run midway through the second quarter to push ahead and take a 37-31 lead into the half
  • The Spiders would stretch the lead to nine midway through the third, but UMBC continued to battle back, and another Smith buzzer-beating put-back cut the deficit to 51-45 after three.
  • The Retrievers found themselves down 60-53 with under two minutes left, but Smith would yet again get an offensive put-back to cut the Richmond lead to 60-55 with 1:45 left.
  • After the Spiders missed a shot, Nia Staples (Cincinnati, Oh.) found Dixon streaking down the court. Dixon was fouled and hit both free throws to make it a 60-57 game.
  • A Richmond turnover with 34 seconds left gave UMBC a chance to tie, but an offensive foul gave the ball back to the Spiders with 22 seconds left.
  • The guests would hit all of their free throws down the stretch to escape with the victory.
UMBC hits the road this weekend when it faces St.Francis Brooklyn on Sunday at 1 p.m.
