Women's Soccer Surrenders a Pair of Second Half Goals in 2-1 Defeat Against UAlbany

Izzy Binko Produces First Goal of Season for UMBC

BALTIMORE – The visiting UAlbany Great Danes scored a pair of second half goals to record a come-from-behind victory against the UMBC women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Retriever Soccer Park.

The Retrievers, who fell to 4-5-4 (0-2-2 America East), scored a late first half goal to grab a 1-0 advantage at the halftime break. Sophomore midfielder Izzy Binko (Selbyville, Del., Indian River) came off the bench to produce her first marker of the season following a great setup by classmate Abby Joseph (Lexington Park, Md., Great Mills).

The Great Danes, however, scored two unassisted goals in the final half to up their record to 5-7-2 (3-1-1 America East).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany had the game's first quality scoring chance ten minutes into the contest as junior defender Charlotte Takacsy fired a shot to the high far post that was punched away safely by UMBC senior goalkeeper Morgan McGruder (Overland Park, Kan., Blue Valley North).
  • The Retrievers found themselves with a golden opportunity in the 16' after the visitors had a communication breakdown in front of their own goal. Senior midfielder Alyssa Palmucci (Mullica Hill, N.J., Kingsway/East Carolina) collected a loose ball in the box but her shot from seven yards out banged off the far post.
  • UMBC capitalized on their next chance as Binko beat Great Danes' junior netminder Megan Hart with 3:33 left before halftime. Joseph initiated the play all the way from midfield as she made a run from the near sideline, cut down the center of the field and led Binko on the right side of the box. Binko then fired a winner just under the center of the crossbar from seven yards away.
  • The Great Danes evened the contest in the 53' as senior forward Sahara Zingano beat McGruder with a shot to the lower right corner after following up her initial shot which was blocked by a defender.
  • The Black and Gold had an opportunity to take the lead back in the 69' after Palmucci sent a great cross from the right corner into the far side of the box but junior forward Meghan McKye's (Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Northern Secondary School) header sailed just wide of the cage.
  • The visitors produced the go-ahead tally on a spectacular individual effort by senior midfielder Marisa Tava with just under 18 minutes remaining in the contest. Tava collected a back pass in the center of the pitch from forward Lola Cotter, dribbled around a couple of defenders, and then drilled a 30-yard shot to the upper left corner of the goal.

NOTES
  • UAlbany took 26 shots while the hosts fired eight. The Great Danes were awarded three corner kicks while UMBC attempted just one.
  • McGruder went the distance and recorded a season-high 10 saves.
  • Binko registered her fifth career goal and Joseph now has a team-high three assists.
UMBC will travel to NJIT on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and will have another tough road game versus UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
