Senior Sierra Tosten produces gold in the 100 butterfly,

Newark, Del. - The UMBC women's swimming and diving squad opened the 2022-23 campaign by competing in a double dual meet at the University of Delaware. NCAA Division III powerhouse Johns Hopkins also took part in the meet.

Senior Sierra Tosten captured UMBC's first gold of 2022-23. The defending America East champion in the 100 butterfly captured that event in a time of 58.59.

In her UMBC debut, junior Borka Tomanova placed second in the 100 backstroke at Delaware. Junior Nyah Stahl also broke the 1-minute mark, finishing fourth.

Senior Makayla Ludwick touched in third place in the 1000 yard freestyle in a time of 10:57.42.

Freshman diver Alicia Buteau placed fifth on the 3-meter board with a score of 214.88. She was also UMBC's top performer of the 1-meter board, finishing in sixth place with a total of 207.23.

"It was great to get back in the pool again, racing and diving," said Head Coach Matt Donovan. "Kicking off the season with some of the best competition in the area shows us where we are and where we need to go in the coming months."

Both the women's and men's teams head to conference rival NJIT for a meet on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 14-15. The men will face the host Highlanders and St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, while the women take on America East foe Vermont, along with the Terriers.
