BALTIMORE-- UMBC women's soccer (2-1-1) scored two unanswered goals to come-from-behind for a 2-1 victory over VMI (2-4-0) on Saturday night. UMBC got the tying goal just before halftime from Grace Harvey (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg), and got the game-winner from Juliana Rafaniello (Old Bridge, N.J.) early in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED:

Caroline Koutsos (Boyds, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) had the first Retriever chance early, but her attempt was saved in the fifth minute.

VMI broke through first with Riley Flanagan beating Morgan McGruder (Overland Park, Kan.) in the 11th minute.

UMBC controlled most of the run of play in the first half.

Grace Harvey tied it up with a header into the bottom left corner in the 37th minute. Harvey took a cross from Izzy Binko (Selbyville, Del.) who was sent in from Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) for the goal.

The Keydets nearly retook the lead just seconds later, but the shot hit off the crossbar.

Juliana Rafaniello broke the tie with her third goal of the season in the 66th minute. Rafaniello took the pass and dribbled through the defense, slotting it home in the right corner.

UMBC controlled play down the stretch to hold off VMI for a 2-1 win.

The goal for Harvey was the first of her career.

UMBC outshot the Keydets 19-11 with 11 of the 19 shots going on goal.

Morgan McGruder made five saves in the win for her first career victory.

The Retrievers had six corner kicks in the match, compared to just two for VMI.
The Retrievers will conclude their three-game homestand against Longwood on Thursday, September 9. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
