Box Score Video Highlights
BALTIMORE - Visiting Delaware quickly responded to a UMBC game-tying goal and added an insurance score as they defeated the Retrievers, 3-1, in a non-conference match before 876 fans at Retriever Soccer Park.
UMBC sophomore forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep), who missed the final 82 minutes of the game at UMass Lowell on Saturday due to injury, came off the bench at halftime and scored his eighth goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1.
UMBC has dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season and falls to 5-4-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMBC dominated the early stages of the game, taking four early corners, but only managed one shot on goal in the first half.
- Delaware earned a corner in the 24' and back Einar Hardarson made a near post run and scored on the service by Tiago Santos.
- The tandem of Calheira and Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) connected early in the second half to draw the hosts even. The two worked a perfect give-and-go with Calheira scoring from 13 yards out in the 52'.
- But less than four minutes later, UD's Pedro Barbolla made a great effort down the left side and his feed to the right post was knocked in by Carlos Fernandez.
- UMBC got a great chance to re-tie the score in the 66', but graduate student midfielder Rhys Davies' (Ammandford, Wales) hard shot from the left side was saved by Scott Sampson.
- Three minutes later, the Blue Hens got their third goal on another nice passing play, from Justin Ruth to Zach Golden.
NOTABLE
- Calheira has reached the 20-point plateau (8-4-20) in ten games, while Becher now has 16 points (6-4-16) and has hit the scoring sheet in eight of his last nine appearances.
UMBC gets back to America East play when they travel to Burlington to face Vermont on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 11:00 a.m.
