Women's Soccer Opens Extensive Travel Weekend at Wagner on Thursday Evening

The UMBC women's soccer team (2-2-2) opens a weekend of travel when they visit the Wagner Seahawks (3-3-0) on Thursday, Sept. 16. The game is slated to get underway at 5:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on NEC Front Row.   

 

The match at Wagner was originally schedule for Sunday, Aug. 22, but it was postponed due to Hurricane Henri.

 

In the latest outing, the Retrievers dropped a contest to another NEC opponent, falling, 2-1, at Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, Sept. 12.

  

 

HONORED:

 

  • Freshman goalkeeper Abbey Cowles (Colts Neck, N.J.) earned America East Conference Defender of the Week and co-Rookie of the Week honors for games ending Sept. 12. In her collegiate debut, Cowles made 13 saves versus Longwood on Sept. 9.

 

NOTABLE:

 

  • Junior Juliana Rafaniello's (Old Bridge, N.J.) leads the squad with three goals and seven total points. She has netted the game-winning goals in both Retriever wins this season and is tied for first place (with four others) with the two game-winners.
  • Junior midfielder Caroline Koutsos (Boyds, Md./Good Counsel) scored her second goal of the season at The Mount on Sunday. Koutsos is second in America East with ten shots on goal.

 

A GLANCE AT THE SEAHAWKS:

 

  • Wagner enters today's match with a record of 3-3-0 and snapped a three-game slide with a 2-1 win over UAlbany on Sunday.
  • The Seahawks are 1-1 versus America East competition, with an earlier 1-0 loss at NJIT.  
  • UAlbany outshot Wagner, 26-7, but junior fullback Annie White broke a 1-1 tie in the 81' with her second goal of the season to give the Seahawks the victory.
  • Junior forward Madison Carr, a Perryville, Md. native, leads Wagner with four gola on the season. Rockhill leads team in points with eight.  
  • Junior goalkeeper Erin Kelly has started four of six games and possesses a 1.25 goals against average.

 

SERIES NOTES:

 

  • UMBC is 6-0-1 in seven previous contests versus Wagner.
  • The last match-up occurred in 2013 and resulted in a 2-1 UMBC victory.

 

UP NEXT:

  • UMBC returns home on Thursday night/Friday morning and heads to Maine on Saturday for a Sunday noon contest versus the Black Bears.
