Women's Soccer Opens Three-Game Road Swing at The Mount on Sunday

The UMBC women's soccer team (2-1-2) kicks off a three-game road trip when they make the short trip to Emmitsburg to take on Mount St. Mary's (1-6-0) at Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 12. The game is slated to get underway at 1:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on NEC Front Row.   

 

The Retrievers are unbeaten in their last two contests, capping a three-game homestand with a 2-1 win over VMI on Sept. 4 and a scoreless draw versus Longwood on Sept. 9.

  

RETRIEVER WATCH:

 

  • Freshman goalkeeper Abbey Cowles (Colts Neck, N.J.) made 13 saves versus Longwood in her collegiate debut. She became the third UMBC netminder to make their initial collegiate appearance and start in 2021.

 

NOTABLE:

 

  • Junior Juliana Rafaniello's (Old Bridge, N.J.) two-goal game in the opener versus Robert Morris was UMBC's first since Christina Corbi netted a pair vs. UML in October, 2018. Her five-point game is the first since teammate Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) registered six with a hat trick versus UNH on Oct. 22, 2017.
  • Rafanielllo leads the squad with three goals and seven total points. She has netted the game-winning goals in both Retriever wins this season.
  • UMBC's 2-1-2 start is their best since a 4-1-0 run through five games in 2014.  

 

 A GLANCE AT THE MOUNTAINEERS:

 

  • Mount St. Mary's comes in to today's match with a record of 1-6, after a 2-1 setback at Navy on Friday.
  • They are on a four-game losing streak, with the last two setbacks occurring by one goal.
  • Mount St. Mary's win came Friday, August 27,  a 1-0 win over Davidson 
  • The Mount's leading goal-scorers are senior Elisabeth Rockhill with three goals and junior Kalli Bell, who has a pair.
  • Rockhill leads team in points with eight.  
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Arden Lembryk leads the team in saves with 36, while grad student Maggie Barron has 25 saves.
  • Tori Krause in her fourth season at Mount St. Mary's, where her record over that time is 13-33-4.
  • Assistant coach Steven Samuel, UMBC, '17 is in his first season with the program.

  

SERIES NOTES:

 

  • UMBC leads the series over Mount St. Mary's 16-3, including winning the last three games in a row.
  • UMBC won the last matchup at Mount St. Mary's, 3-0, on Sunday September 1, 2019.

UMBC will travel to Wagner for a make-up contest on Thursday, Sept. 16 (5:00 p.m.).
