Softball Blanks Maine to Complete Sweep and Clinch Spot in America East Tournament

Box Score

Video Highlights

Baltimore, Md. -- Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) homered for the second straight day, while Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) had an RBI double and pitched a complete game as the UMBC Softball completed the three game sweep of Maine with a 3-0 win on Sunday.

With the victory, UMBC (20-10, 9-4 AE) clinched a spot in the four team America East tournament. The Retrievers also moved into a tie for first place in the conference with Stony Brook.

The team also honored fifth year senior Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) with a pregame ceremony. Daigneau had a hit and stolen base in the game, and finished the week tied for first all-time at UMBC in triples with 15 and tied for fourth in stolen bases with 64.

Pierce went 5-for-8 with two homers, five RBI, a walk and a stolen base in the series.

Coppersmith went the distance, allowing just two hits and striking out eight in picking up her third victory of the week. It was her second complete-game shutout of the week, and the 20th of her career, making her the new UMBC all-time leader in the category.

For the weekend, Coppersmith, Madie Leach (Erie, Pa.) and Gillian McCarthy (Northfield, N.J.) pitched 19 shutout innings, with 19 strikeouts, eight walks and allowing just 8 hits.

In the first, Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) hit a one out triple and scored on Pierce's two run homer. Keffler was the only player in the game with multiple hits, and added a stolen base.

In the bottom of the fourth, Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) hit a two-out double, and her pinch-runner, Jaedyn McKeon (Stewartstown, Pa.) scored when Coppersmith followed with a double of her own.

Maine's final 11 batters were retired, thanks to Coppersmith and some sensational Retriever defense.

The Black Bears (11-19, 7-8 AE) had a leadoff single in the fourth, and after a fly out, Keffler made a running grab of a bloop in right center and doubled-off the runner at first to end the inning. In the fifth, Coppersmith struck out the first two batters, but Chloe Obispo (Virginia Beach, Va.) made a diving catch of a liner to end the inning. Obispo would make an even better diving catch of a liner to end the top of the sixth.

Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Md.) and Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Md.) also had hits for UMBC.

UMBC travels to Stony Brook in a battle for first place to close the regular season next week. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, followed by a single game on Saturday,
