Baltimore, Md. -- Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) struck out 13 in seven shutout innings, while Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.), Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) and Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) each drove in a run to lead the UMBC Softball team to a 3-0 victory over UMass Lowell in the first round of the America East Tournament on Thursday afternoon.
UMBC (23-11) took the lead in the fourth when Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) hit a leadoff single and stole second. After a pop-up, Wilson drove in Keffler with an RBI single through the left side. After a lineout, Stott ripped an RBI triple off the wall to score pinch-runner Julia Colton (Elkridge, Md.) and make it 2-0.
UMass Lowell (13-17) threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with two outs, but Coppersmith got a strikeout to end the threat.
Sierra Pierce drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom half of the inning to force in arun and make it 3-0. Coppersmith retired the final seven River Hawks in order to close out the victory and improve to 17-2 on the season.
Stott, Keffler and Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) all had two hits for the Retrievers, with Daigneau and Keffler each adding a stolen base. Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) walked twice and scored a run for UMBC.
The Retrievers will continue play in the winners bracket tomorrow at 11 a.m.
