Game 1 Video Highlights

Baltimore, Md. -- Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) went 3-for-4 and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) struck out 14 as the UMBC Softball team took game one against Hartford, 5-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hawks would take the second game, 8-1, to earn the split.

Game 1

Daigneau tripled to leadoff the bottom of the first and then scored on a Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) single to put UMBC (17-10, 6-4 AE) up 1-0. The score would remain that way until the fourth when Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) reached on an infield single with two outs. Coppersmith then drove in pinch-runner Jaedyn Mckeon (Stewartstown, Pa.) all the way from first with a double that hit the top of the fence to put the Retrievers up 2-0.

With one out in the fifth, Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) singled, Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) was hit by a pitch, and Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) singled to load the bases.

Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) then drove in a pair with a single, and Pierce would later score on a fielder's choice to make it 5-0. Daigneau and Keffler each stole a base and Meghan Dempsey (Collegville, Pa.) also had a single in the game.

Coppersmith went the distance, striking out 14, walking one and allowing three hits to improve to 12-2 on the season.

Game 2

Hartford (4-9, 2-9 AE) jumped out in front 5-0 within the first 2 innings. Gillian McCarthy (Northfield, N.J.) came on in relief of Madison O'Berg (Loraine, Ohio) with two on and one out in the second, and got out of the inning unharmed.

McCarthy worked five innings, allowing two earned runs, on 3 hits and striking out four. Madie Leach (Erie, Colo.) came on and got the final two outs of the seventh, punctuating it with a strikeout.

Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) doubled with one out in the eighth and moved to third on a Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) single. She then stole home on a double steal to get UMBC on the board late. Stott finished with two hits and Pierce added one of her own for the Retrievers.

UMBC hosts Maine for its final home weekend of 2021. The doubleheader on Saturday starts at 1 p.m., while the finale will be at noon on Sunday. Senior Day festivities for both the class of 2020 and 2021 will begin 15 minutes before first pitch.
