Softball Ends Big East Leader Villanova's 11-Game Winning Streak in Friday Split.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Baltimore, Md-- Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) went 3-for-4, Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) hit a two-run homer and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) struck out 13 in a complete game performance, as the UMBC Softball team ended Big East leader Villanova's 11-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory on Friday afternoon. The win helped the Retrievers earn a split with the Wildcats.

UMBC (11-5) fell behind Villanova (14-8, 3-0 BIG EAST) 2-0 in the third inning after a pair of errors and a passed ball. It would remain 2-0 until the fifth, when Macy Granzow (Glenn Dale, Md.) worked a full count walk to start the inning. Daigneau then slapped a single through the left side, and Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) filed with a bloop single to load the bases with no outs.

UMBC tied the game when the next batter, Coppersmith, hit a short grounder to third, the third baseman tried to throw home for the force play, but the throw sailed high and to the backstop, allowing both Granzow and Daigneau to score. Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) then hit a fly to shallow right that the second baseman caught, but Turner raced home and just beat the throw to give the Retrievers a 3-2 lead.

Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) ripped a leadoff single to left in the sixth, and then Hawker lined a two-run homer just over the fence in left to make it a 5-2 UMBC lead, it was her first homer of the season.

Coppersmith retired the final seven batters she faced, and finished with 13 strikeouts while allowing just two hits and one earned run. Dempsey went 2-for-3, Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) went 1-for-3 and Daigneau added a stolen base in the victory.

In the first game, Pierce was the only Retriever with multiple hits, as she had a leadoff single in the second and a solo homer in the fourth. She also made a diving grab in center to rob the Wildcats of a hit in the fifth.

In the bottom half of the fifth Daigneau doubled with two outs and Granzow followed with her first career hit, an RBI double. Turner also singled in the game for UMBC, as Villanova took it 12-2 in five innings.

UMBC will start America East play next weekend when it hosts Binghamton for a pair of doubleheaders. First pitch on both days is scheduled for noon, and the final game of the series will count as a non-conference contest.
