Wilson's Big Day Leads Softball to Split at UAlbany

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Game 1 Video Highlights

Albany, N.Y. --  Sophomore Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) hit a pair of two-run homers in game one, and drove in a total of five runs on the day as the UMBC Softball team split a doubleheader at UAlbany.

The Retrievers took the first game, 9-4, while the Great Danes won the second, 12-4, in five innings.

Wilson's first homer of the game gave UMBC (14-8, 3-2 AE) a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but UAlbany (12-15, 3-5 AE) responded with two in the bottom half after a solo homer and a pair of singles sandwiched around a stolen base. That would be it for the Great Danes for a while, as pitcher Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) would retire the next 15 in a row.

Coppersmith would blast a three-run homer in the top of the 2nd, and Wilson would her second two-run shot of the game in the third to put the Retrievers up 7-2. Coppersmith would score on an error in the fourth to make it 8-2, and Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) would add an RBI single in the sixth to make it 9-2. UAlbany would add a pair of unearned runs in the 6th to finish the scoring for the day.

Coppersmith improved to 9-2 with the complete game victory, striking out 11, walking one, allowing just three hits and two earned runs. Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.)had a hit and scored a run, while Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) added a hit for the Retrievers.

UAlbany jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game, but UMBC responded in the third inning. Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) hit a sac fly to score pinch-runner Julia Colton (Elkridge, Md.). Daigneau then stole second and the throw allowed Logan hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) to score from third. Wilson then singled home Daigneau to tie the game at three.

The Great Danes would explode for seven in the bottom of the third, however. Keffler would score on an error in the fifth to cut the lead to 10-4, but the hosts would get a two-run walk-off single in the bottom half of the inning.

Pierce was the lone Retriever with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3, while Daigneau and Keffler each had a hit, a run and a stolen base. Coppersmith and Hawker each also had hits for UMBC.

The two teams will play the rubber match tomorrow at noon
