DAWG BITES

On a day of comebacks, the Retrievers pulled out a 12-11 victory over the VCU Rams on Saturday, February 27. UMBC trailed, 8-3, at the end of the first half, getting an early hat trick from sophomore Claire Bockstie.

Senior Courtney Renehan helped to kickstart a 6-1 run in the second half for the Retrievers, with Megan Halczuk helping Shannon Finch to tie the game up at 9-9 with 15:28 to go.

VCU retook the lead seconds later but Halczuk would tie the game up again at 10-all with 10:52 on the clock. Gerow added her third goal of the game a little over a minute later to give UMBC its first lead of the day, 11-10, with 9:36 to go.

With 49 seconds on the clock, the Rams tied the game up for the fourth time. Renehan would win the ensuing draw and after the Retrievers called a timeout, Halczuk would take the final shot of the game with ten seconds on the clock to give UMBC the 12-11 win.

Freshman Dymin Gerow scored her first career goal during the victory, collecting a hat trick during the second half.

Lexi Roberts was named America East Defensive Player of the Week, after making 10 saves in the win and allowing just three goals in the second half.

The week prior, Stony Brook won back-to-back games at LaValle Stadium against #15 USC, 15-3, and Boston University, 20-10.

Against the Trojans, Taryn Ohlmiller matched a career-high with six goals in the win. Ohlmiller, who scored a goal to go along with four assists the game prior against the Terriers, was named America East Offensive Player of the Week.
