Newark, N.J. -- A short-handed UMBC Volleyball team (8-3, 7-3 AE) completed its two-day, four match road gauntlet with three wins, after splitting on Monday.
The Retrievers, who still sit in second place heading into the final weekend of the season, defeated host NJIT (25-16, 22-25, 25-9, 25-20) in the morning before falling to New Hampshire (25-17, 25-22, 25-19) later in the afternoon
Against NJIT (1-9, 1-8 AE), Darina Kumanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) had 10 kills, 17 digs and three aces, while Anouk Van Noord ( led the way with 16 kills and four blocks. Kamani Conteh (New Castle, Del.) made her first start of the season, and first ever start in the middle, and picked up 15 kills and a career-high six blocks. Aysia Miller (Mililani, Hawaii) had another double-double, picking up 45 assists and 12 digs. She also contributed with two kills, a block and an ace.
The Retrievers hit .375 on Miller's sets in the first match. Weronika Wrzesinska (Frednowy, Poland) made her first career start and tallied seven digs. De Marzi added nine kills, five digs, two blocks, an assist and two aces. Emily Ferketic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) accumulated seven kills, three digs and two blocks, while classmate Kayla Tomas (Silver Spring, Md.) added seven digs. Loren Teter (Redondo Beach, Calif.) finished with 12 digs, four assists and an ace.
In the second match, UNH (5-3, 5-3 AE) controlled the match from start to finish en route to the sweep. Miller was again sensational, finishing with 13 assists and 9 digs. Van Noord led the way with 14 kills, De Marzi had seven kills, and Wrzesinska had a career high 13 digs. Teter chipped in with 14 digs, and Conteh finished with 10. kills on .474 hitting.
UMBC closes the season at home next Sunday, when it hosts Hartford for a doubleheader. Matches are set for 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
