Keating Walk-Off Double Propels Softball to Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Video Highlights: Game 1 | Game 2

Baltimore, Md. -- Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning that gave UMBC a 6-5 victory over visiting Morgan State and a sweep of the doubleheader Sunday and the four game series. The Retrievers blanked the Bears 7-0 in the opener.

In that second game, UMBC took a big early lead thanks to a five-run first inning. Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) got an RBI single for the game's first run. Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) then lined a two-run double to left, and the Retrievers made it 3-0.  Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) next ripped an RBI triple to right before Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) drove in the inning's final run on a single.

But Morgan State kept chipping away and tied the game at five with two runs in top of the seventh. That's when UMBC answered. Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) entered the game and led off with an infield single. Daigneau then went to second on a throwing error when Turner tried to bunt. That set the stage for Keating, who fell behind on the count (0-2) before working hard and, on the seventh pitch of the at-bat, crushed a double off the fence in left-center, letting Daigneau score easily.  Coppersmith (6-1) took the win in relief as UMBC (10-4), earning her 500th career strikeout in the proccess. Daigneau went 3-for-3 in the second game with two runs scoresd

The Retrievers had little drama in Game 1. Madie Leach (Erie, Colo.) went the distance, scattering six hits and improved to 2-1 this season.

UMBC took the lead with a three-run second. Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.), and Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) got back-to-back doubles for a 2-0 advantage. Daigneau added the third run on a sacrifice fly. UMBC then scored on an error in the third before adding three more in the sixth.

Stott had the inning's big hit, a two-run single to center, before the Retrievers added the last run on a passed ball.

UMBC now turns to the America East as it hosts Hartford in a doubleheader next Saturday.
