Softball Sweeps Morgan State on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Baltimore, Md. -- The UMBC pitching staff allowed just two runs in 14 innings of work, as the UMBC Softball team swept host Morgan State on Saturday, 9-0 and 5-2.

In game one, Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) struck out 12, walked three and allowed just one hit in six innings. Madie Leach (Erie, Colo.) then worked a scoreless 7th for the win. Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) earned her second career victory in game two, pitching all seven innings and allowing just the two earned runs.

There was no scoring in the first game, until UMBC (8-4) broke it open in the fifth. Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) had an RBI groundout with the bases loaded to break the scoreless tie, and then Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) smacked a two-RBI single to make it 3-0. An error then scored Keffler and Coppersmith helped her own cause with an RBI double.

Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) hit a pinch-hit homer with one out in the seventh to push the Retrievers lead to 6-0.  A two out error kept the inning alive, Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) followed with a double to put two in scoring position, and then a wild pitch brought Brooke Dooley (Bear, Del.) home from third to make it 7-0. Pinch hitter Macy Granzow (Glenn Dale, Md.) walked and then Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) hit a two-run double to account for the final score.

The Retrievers jumped out to a 2-0 in the second inning game two after a Lonchar RBI double and an error scored a run. Morgan State (5-5, 4-0 MEAC) responded in the third to tie it up, but UMBC quickly re-took the lead in the fourth, however. Lonchar hit a two-out double and advanced to third on a misplay in the outfield, she then scored the eventual winning run on a throwing error on the next play.

UMBC added to it's lead in the fifth when Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) hit a one out single and scored on a Coppersmith double. Coppersmith moved to third on the throw home and then scored on a Wilson RBI groundout.

O'Berg would then shut down the Lady Bears, getting the next seven in a row, before a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh put the tying run on deck. O'Berg, however, would induce a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

The two teams will close the weekend with a doubleheader at The Diamond on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
