Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md.-- Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) picked up three hits and an RBI on the day and Courtney Coppersmith blasted a two-run homer, but the UMBC Softball team (6-4) was swept by George Washington (8-6) on Sunday, 1-0 and 14-4 (F/5).
The Retrievers got all their runs on the day in the third inning of the second game.
Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) and Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) hit back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the third. Maddie Daigneau (New River, Md.) then ripped arun-scoring double to make it 5-1. Keffler then drove in Stott on an RBI groundout, and UMBC then cut the deficit to one on Coppersmith's two-run homer to center.
The Retrievers defense was stellar as it turned three double plays on the day.
Game one was a pitchers duel that featured some stellar defense. The lone run of the game came on a solo homer by GW in the fourth inning. Keffler went 2-for-3 with a double, while Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) also doubled and Daigneau added a single of her own. Coppersmith took the tough luck loss, striking out five, walking none and allowing just three hits as she fell to 4-1 on the season.
The Retrievers conclude non-conference play next weekend with a double-header at Morgan State on Friday and a home double-header against Bryant on Saturday
