Baltimore, Md. -- Four players had multi-hit games as the UMBC Softball team (6-2) defeated George Washington (6-6), 4-3, in game one of a double-header on Saturday at The Diamond.
The Colonials would have a big first inning thanks to a few errors en route to a 18-3 five-inning win in the second game
Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.), Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.), Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) and Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) all picked up two hits in the victory. Coppersmith struck out 11 while allowing just four hits in the complete-game victory.
Daigneau and Keffler each singled to start the game and Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) walked to load the bases with one out. Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) hit a dribbler right in front of the plate that GW could not field and it was good for an RBI single to put UMBC 1-0.
The score remained that way until the fourth, when a two-out two-run homer put GW up 2-1. The Retrievers answered in the bottom of the inning, however. Turner would hit a leadoff double and move to third on a Daigneau single.
After a strikeout and a Daigneau stolen base had two in scoring position with one out for Coppersmith, who laid for the RBI to tie the game back at 2. Della Guardia then followed with her team-leading 12th RBI of the season on a single to left to give UMBC a 3-2 lead.
After Coppersmith (4-0) got a strikeout to escape a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth, Turner hit a two-out double to keep the inning alive. GW appeared to get out unharmed when Daigneau struck out, but the ball got away from the catcher who then threw the ball into the outfield, allowing Turner to score and put UMBC up 4-2.
The Colonials got a run back in the sixth after a couple bloops with two outs, but Coppersmith got a pop up to end the threat and would work a perfect seventh, punctuated by two strikeouts to end it.
In the second game, GW used a couple errors to put up 12 unearned runs in a 13 run first. UMBC pitchers allowed only three earned runs in the game.
Madison WIlson (Abingdon, Md.) hit a solo homer, the first of her career, and Jessica Choplinsky (Elkton, Md.) got two RBI singles for the Retrievers. Daigneau picked up two hits in the second game, while Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) also had a hit for UMBC.
The two teams have a double-header again tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
