Stony Brook, N.Y.-- UMBC men's basketball picked up their third conference sweep of the year with a 60-48 win against Stony Brook on Monday afternoon. Senior guard Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) led four in double figures with 14 points going 5-11 from the floor and 4-6 from three.
UMBC wins their third straight to move to 13-4, 9-3 AE while the Seawolves fall to 8-10, 6-6 AE.
Rogers led the Retrievers with 14 points with Brandon Horvath (West River, Md./Southern) and L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) chipped in 13 and R.J. Eytle-Rock added 11 and seven rebounds in the win.
Mouhamadou Gueye led all scorers with 16 points and collected 11 rebounds in the loss.
Stony Brook got out to an early start connecting on their first three shots. Darnell Rogers drilled a three to keep it close at the under 16 timeout. The Retrievers began their comeback holding the Seawolves scoreless over a four minute stretch to retake the lead on an L.J. Owens three. That lead would be short lived as the Seawolves answered on their very next possession.
The Retriever defense would come to play late in the half, holding the Seawolves scoreless again for a three-minute stretch that was capped by an Owens floater that gave UMBC the lead back. UMBC put together a 6-0 run to keep a 26-24 lead at the break.
Rogers led all scorers with eight points going 2-3 from three. Dimitrije Spasojevic (Vrsac, Serbia) pulled in eight rebounds as UMBC outrebounded the Seawolves 20-12 in the first half.
The Retrievers picked up where they left off in the first half going on an 8-0 run to start the half that gave them a double digit lead. Stony Brook would have try to cut into the deficit, but UMBC held the lead around 10 points for most of the half.
Stony Brook would make a late push using a 6-0 spurt to cut it to six with five minutes to go, but a big three from Rogers extended the lead and UMBC held off the Seawolves for a 60-48 win.
Spasojevic had a season-high 11 rebounds in the contest and the Retrievers outrebounded Stony Brook 37-27, scoring 22 points in the paint.
The Retrievers will now have the week off before hosting Vermont on Thursday-Friday, Feb. 18-19 at the UMBC Event Center. Thursday's game will tip-off at 7 p.m. and will be aired nationally on ESPN U. Friday will start at 5 p.m.
