Box Score

Video Highlights

Stony Brook, N.Y. -- Freshman Aysia Miller (Mililani, Hawaii) had another dominant performance to lead the UMBC Volleyball team to its second straight five-set victory (25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-9) over host Stony Brook on Sunday morning.

Miller followed up her freshman school record 55 assists performance last night with a 47 assist and a career-high 23 dig showing today. She added three aces, two kills and UMBC (3-0, 2-0 AE) hit .326 on her sets.

Sophomore Emily Ferketic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had a career-best 17 kills on .326 hitting with four aces, four digs and an assist. She came up big in the fifth set, with with three kills on four attempts for a .750 hitting percentage,

Senior Anouk Van Noord (Amsterdam, Netherlands) made her first start of the year and tied Ferketic for the match-lead in kills with 17, while adding five digs, a solo block and an assist. Van Noord was a perfect five kills on five attacks in the fifth set.

Graduate student libero Loren Teter (Redondo Beach, Calif.) had the tenth most digs in a single match in program history, finishing with 26 digs, including nine in the fifth set alone.

Freshman Darina Kumanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) had a solid match, finishing with nine kills and 11 digs, while classmate Michela De Marzi (Milan, Italy) had seven kills, three digs and a block.

Fellow freshman Beste Ayhan (Istanbul, Turkey) had six kills a dig and a block, while sophomore defensive specialist Kayla Tomas (Silver Spring, Md.) came off the bench to start the third set and finished with three digs and was a perfect 10-for-10 on serve receive.

Stony Brook (0-4, 0-2 AE) jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set, but the Retrievers would battle back and eventually take an 11-9 lead to force a Seawolves timeout. The teams would then trade points until a late 4-0 run put UMBC up 20-17. SBU would get three in a row to tie it back up at 20, and UMBC would eventually take a 23-21 lead via Van Noord kill and a Kumanova ace. The hosts again responded to tie the set at 23, but UMBC called timeout and would score the final two points of the set on back-to-back kills from Ayhan and Van Noord.

The second set was similar to the first as Stony Brook jumped out to a big early lead, this time 10-6. The lead grew to 18-12, before a furious Retriever rally closed the gap to 19-18. However, the Seawolves would win six of the next seven points to take the set.

This time it was UMBC who jumped out to a big early lead in the third set, pushing the advantage to 14-8 midway through the set, before holding an 18-12 lead later. Just like the previous set, the team that fell behind rallied, as SBU closed the gap to 22-21. However, Ferketic almost single-handedly ended the rally, getting a kill and an ace to give UMBC set point, before a Stony Brook attack error gave the set to UMBC.

The fourth set was just like the first two, as SBU jumped out to a 4-0 lead. UMBC eventually took a 6-5 lead, but the Seawolves scored six of the next seven points and cruised to a 25-19 set victory to force a fifth set.

Ferketic got three straight kills off Miller assists to give the Retrievers a 3-0 lead to begin the fifth. The lead grew to 6-2, but four straight points from SBU tied it at six and forced a UMBC timeout. Kunaova got a kill followed by an answer from the hosts to tie it at 7, but a Van Noord kill would give UMBC the lead for good at 8-7. Later, Van Noord would get two straight kills to force a Stony Brook timeout with UMBC up 11-8. After an attack error made it 12-8, Van Noord got her fourth kill on four attempts in the set to make it 13-8. The Seawolves got a point back to make it 13-9, but Van Noord picked up her fifth kill on five attacks in the set and then Kumanova closed out the match with a kill.

UMBC now begins the pod portion of conference play, as it travels to Binghamton for matches with defending champion UAlbany and host Binghamton next Sunday. The three teams will then play another pod the following Sunday at UMBC.
