BALTIMORE - Freshman Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Episocpal) and sophomore Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Preparatory) led the charge for the UMBC women's lacrosse team on Saturday, but it was sophomore Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) who notched the game-winner with 10 seconds remaining to lift the Retrievers over the VCU Rams, 12-11.

UMBC picks up its first win of the season to move to 1-1, while VCU drops to 3-1 with its first loss of the season.
STRAIGHT FACTS
VCU scored first at the 27:58 mark before Bockstie tied things up at 1-1 less than a minute later.
After that, the Rams took control in the first half, scoring seven goals to take an 8-3 lead. Bockstie scored her final two goals of the game in the first period: one at the 15:12 mark and one to close out the period off a feed from Halczuk.
Senior Courtney Renehan (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg/Maryland) added a goal to the board just 21 seconds into the second half to help kickstart a 7-1 run for the Retrievers.
After VCU scored to extend its lead to 9-4 at the 28:06 mark, Gerow notched her first career goal before Renahan put a free-position shot into the back of the attempt to help UMBC close the gap to 9-6 with 21:45 to play.
Senior Lily Kennedy (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) scored off an assist from Halczuk before Gerow added a second goal at the 18:02 mark.
Halczuk got her third assist of the day when she helped classmate Shannon Finch (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) with a pass to tie the game up at 9-9 with 15:28 to go.
VCU retook the lead seconds later but Halczuk would tie the game up again at 10-all with 10:52 on the clock. Gerow added her third goal of the game a little over a minute later to give UMBC its first lead of the day, 11-10, with 9:36 to go.
With 49 seconds on the clock, the Rams tied the game up for the fourth time. Renehan would win the ensuing draw and after the Retrievers called a timeout, Halczuk would take the final shot of the game with ten seconds on the clock to give UMBC the 12-11 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
60 - the total number of shots between the two teams, with UMBC taking 33 and VCU taking 27.
17 - the number of draws that UMBC controlled. Renehan and freshman Kennedy Evans (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) each had five on the day, while VCU had eight combined.
10 - the number of saves Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston/Army West Point) made in the afternoon.
5 - the career-high number of points Halczuk scored (2g, 3a); she also set a career-high in assists.

UMBC will begin America East conference play on Friday, March 5 when they welcome the Stony Brook Seawolves to UMBC Stadium at 5 p.m.
