BALTIMORE-- UMBC women's soccer (4-5-2, 1-3-0 AE) had a strong second half, but a late UMass Lowell (7-3-1, 4-0-0 AE) goal in the 79th minute pushed them to a 1-0 win on Sunday. Morgan McGruder (Overland Park, Kan.) had a season-high 11 saves in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED:

UMass Lowell controlled most of the play in the early going, outshooting the Retrievers 15-4 in the first half.

Morgan McGruder came up big in the 14th minute making three straight saves to keep it scoreless.

UMBC had their first good look in the 28th minute as a free-kick from Erin Stevenson went on target but was stopped.

Stevenson had another chance just a minute later but that shot was stopped.

The River Hawks nearly broke the scoreless draw just before the break, but a shot from Kemp hit off the crossbar as we went to the half scoreless.

UMBC hit their stride in the second half. Caroline Koutsos (Boyds, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) had a good chance in the 54th minute, but Sjogren made the save.

Play continued back-and-forth in the middle portion of the half, but the River Hawks finally broke through late.

Ioanna Papatheodorou headed home a cross from Laerke Nikalsson in the 79th minute to give them a 1-0 lead.

The Retrievers challenged late, but could not find the equalizer, dropping the contest 1-0 on Sunday.
NOTABLE:

McGruder made a season-high 11 saves on 12 shots on goal.

Koutsos led the Retrievers with four shots.

Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) had three shots in the loss.
The Retrievers will look to get back in the win column on Thursday, October 7 when they travel to Delaware State. Kick-off with the Hornets is set for 7 p.m.
