BALTIMORE – Despite an outstanding effort in the season finale, the UMBC women's soccer squad (5-9-3, 1-7-1 America East) dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Stony Brook at Retriever Soccer Park.

The contest marked the final game for seniors Megan Chun (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) and Morgan Rees (Ardmore, Pa.) and graduate student Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.), all of whom started the game.

Stevenson played in 72 career games for UMBC, currently fifth on the school's all-time list.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UMBC came out strong and sophomore Grace Harvey (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) rang a shot off the crossbar in the 16'.
  • But one of the Seawolves' first thrusts of the game ended up as the game's lone score. On a free kick, Alyssa Francese re-directed a pass from the wing to give the visitors the lead in the 26'.
  • The Retrievers outshot Stony Brook, 10-8, in the second half as both goalkeepers made several outstanding saves to keep the score 1-0.
  • UMBC junior Caroline Koutsos' (Boyds, Md./Good Counsel) drive from the edge of the box was parried off the crossbar by SBU netminder Emerson Richmond Burke in the 64'.
  • Freshman Izzy Binko (Selbysville, Del.), who was dangerous all night, had a golden chance in the 72', but her attempt from the left wing was also turned aside by Burke.

NOTABLE

  • Each team attempted 15 shots and UMBC freshman goalkeeper Abbey Cowles (Colts Neck, N.J.) stopped five SBU shots on goal.
  • UMBC took all five corner kicks in the contest.
  • The Retrievers started five freshmen in the starting eleven.
