Box Score Hampton,Va. – Sophomore Courtney Coppersmith (York,PA) went 4-for-4 with two homers and five RBI at the plate, while striking out 11 in just four innings of work in the circle as the UMBC Softball team defeated Saint Peter's, 7-0, on Sunday morning at the Pirate Invite.
Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md.) added a two-RBI double to finish the five-game week with nine RBI. Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Madie Leach (Erie, Colo.) pitched three scoreless innings for her second save of the season.
UMBC (5-9) also picked up hits from Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) and Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md.) in the win. Coppersmith struck out the first eight batters she faced, and allowed just one a hit and no walks in her four innings of work. Her RBI double in the first put the Retrievers up 1-0, and she then made it a 2-0 lead with a solo homer in the third.
She then blasted a three-run homer to score Daigneau and Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.). Later in the fourth, Dawson would hit her two-run double to score Pierce and Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) and make it 7-0. Coppersmith would add a single in the sixth to complete her perfect day at the plate.
In game number two, recorded 13 strikeouts for UMBC (4-9) in six scoreless innings of work, but the Blue Hens (16-4) got to the Retriever bullpen and walked-off with a 1-0 win.
UMBC will now return to Baltimore for nearly a month, as they will play 20 straight in the area including 19 in a row at home. The Retrievers will play their lone remaining non-home game of the month when they go to Towson to take on Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday afternoon. They will then return home the next day for a doubleheader against Colgate on Saturday and another twin-bill against Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday.
