Vanessa Esposito Qualifes for Canadian Olympic Trials

Annapolis, Md. – UMBC senior Ilia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) tied his own school record and captured the 50 freestyle at the ECAC Championships Friday evening at Navy.

A day earlier, junior Vanessa Esposito (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) qualified for the Canadian Olympic trials by posting a time of 17:39.06 in the 1650 freestyle. The America East champion in that event, Esposito will attempt to earn a spot on the Canadian team at the trials in Toronto, Ontario beginning on March 30.

Rattsev posted his record-tying effort of 19.85 in both the morning preliminaries and the evening finals. The time also set an ECAC meet record and is a “B” cut qualifying time for the NCAA Swimming Championships.

UMBC sophomore Tiago Asakawa (Sumaré, Brazil) placed third in the race, touching the wall in a time of 20.29.

The competition at Navy continues on Saturday. Live results are available at http://sidearmstats.com/navy/ cswim/index.htm.
