Coastal Carolina Defeats Softball, 4-0, on Sunday

Box Score

Myrtle Beach, S.C. -- Junior outfielder Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) picked up two hits, while sophomore Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) entered in relief and struck out seven, but the visiting UMBC Softball team fell to host Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

Keffler was the only Retriever with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 and picking up a triple and a single. Keffler picked up a hit in every game of the Ripley's Chanticleer Showdown, including two triples, and she also scored three runs on the weekend.

Coppersmith record seven of her eight outs via strikeout, and 23 total (against just 3 hits and no earned runs allowed) for the weekend in just nine innings pitched. The lefty also picked up one of UMBC's (2-2) four hits on the day, when she singled in the first. Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) also singled for the Retrievers, but Coastal Carolina (9-3) kept the UMBC bats in check the rest of the game.

Freshman Madie Leach (Erie, Colo.) made the second start of her young career, striking out two and allowing three earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.

The Retrievers head to Nashville, Tenn. next weekend for the 2020 Purple and Gold Challenge hosted by Lipscomb. The Retrievers will face Indiana State and SIU Edwardsville on Friday at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. (EST), respectively.
