Myrtle Beach, S.C.- Redshirt sophomore
Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) homered and drove in four runs overall, while freshman
Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) picked up three hits and four RBI, to lead an offensive explosion as the UMBC Softball team split on Saturday at the Ripley's Chanticleer Showdown.
Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) threw 4.1 innings of no-hit ball to start Game 1 to pick up her first win of the season. She struck out eight and walked just three as the Retrievers defeated Seton Hall 6-0. The sophomore also had a save in UMBC's season-opening win over Iona on Friday.
Madie Leach (Erie, Pa.) closed it out with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. The Pirates finished the game with only one hit.
Lonchar hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to give UMBC (2-1) a lead it never lost against Seton Hall.
Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.),
Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) and each drove in one run as the Retrievers scored four times in the fourth and stretched the lead to 6-0.
The Retrievers didn't fare as well in the second game as Iona got some revenge with a come-from-behind 12-10 victory.
UMBC jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings of this contest as
Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) drove in two with a double, and Lonchar added an RBI single. But Iona answered with five in the bottom of the second, thanks mostly to a Jessica Chilcott grand slam.
The Gaels moved the lead up to 10-4 by the fourth, but the Retrievers then rallied, cutting the margin to 10-9 thanks to a four-run sixth.
That's when
Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) and Lonchar pitched in with RBI singles, and Dempsey belted a three-run triple. However, Iona added two in the sixth before UMBC bounced back with one in the top of the seventh on a
Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) RBI single, but the Retrievers couldn't finish the comeback.
UMBC will close the weekend on Sunday against host Coastal Carolina at 1:15 p.m.
