BALTIMORE-- UMBC men's basketball defeated Delaware, 76-61 on Tuesday afternoon using a balanced attack, led by a 16 point, eight-rebound performance from Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC). Classmate Daniel Akin (London, England) added 16 points and five rebounds in the win.
UMBC wins their third straight to improve to 3-1 while the Blue Hens fall to 1-1.
Rogers and Akin led the way with 16 points each with Rogers adding eight rebounds. Dimitrije Spasojevic (Vrsac, Serbia) and R.J. Eytle-Rock (London, England) each added 12 points.
Kevin Anderson led all scorers with 18 points with Ryan Allen and Andrew Carr adding 15 and 11 respectively.
The Retrievers shot 53 percent from the floor, holding the Blue Hens to just 37 percent from the floor. UMBC once again shot well from deep, going 7-15 (47 percent), and never trailed in the contest.
UMBC took the lead early and never relinquished it. Spasojevic got the scoring started with a jumper in the first minute. The Retriever led by as many as seven early, but the Blue Hens fought back to tie it using a 6-0 run. Late in the half, Rogers went on a 5-0 run of his own with a pair of free throws and a triple to increase the lead to eight. That lead would get to 10 in the final minute with the Retrievers leading 38-31 at the break.
UMBC put the game away midway through the second half pushing out to a 15 point lead after six straight from Akin including two dunks off feeds from Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.). The Retrievers would lead by as many as 20 in the final minute, defeating Delaware 76-61 on Tuesday.
The Retrievers will finish out their four-game in seven day stretch at Mount St. Mary's on Friday and at Coppin State on Sunday. The contest with the Mountaineers is set for Friday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. on NEC Front Row.
