Women's Soccer Falls to Towson, 1-0, on Thursday Night

The UMBC women's soccer team fell in a hard-fought battle against the Towson Tigers, 1-0, on Thursday, Sept. 5.

 

STRAIGHT FACTS

Meredith Webber (Yardley, Pa.) put a header on goal in the seventh minute, but the Tigers pulled the ball down for a save.

 

The Tigers then made two consecutive shots, both which goalkeeper Alyssa Minnick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was able to keep out of the net before Towson scored in the 12th minute.

 

Shots from Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.), Webber, and Nikki Saad (Hummelstown, Pa.) all put the Retrievers near the goal, but none were able to connect.

 

Christina Corbi (Medford, N.J.) sent a shot towards the net in the 33rd minute, but Towson was once again able to make the save; Corbi would also have a shot saved in the 44th minute to close out the first half.

 

The second half started with two saved shots, one by the Tigers and one by Danielle Fuentes (Rockville, Md./Magruder). 

 

Towson rattled off three more shots, including another one that was saved by Minnick to keep the Retrievers within reach.

 

Stevenson looked to put UMBC on the board in the 73rd minute but the Towson goalkeeper was there to make the save.

 

Megan Chun (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) put a shot on goal in the 77th minute but it was again stopped by the Tigers goalie.

 

The game ended with a shot from Fuentes that ricocheted off the left post and almost into the back of the net to tie the game up. 

 

FOR THE RECORD

Towson moves to 2-3-0 on the year, while UMBC falls to 1-2-2.

 

BY THE NUMBERS

12 - Each team took 12 shots throughout the contest, with the Tigers edging out the Retrievers, 8-7, in shots on goal.

 

7 - Both goalkeeping units made seven saves during the game.

 

4 - Stevenson led the team with four shots.

 

3 - UMBC took three corner kicks in the game, while Towson only had one.

 

MINDING THE NET

Delaney Mitchell and Hannah Warner split time in net for the Tigers, making seven combined saves in the win. Minnick made a career-high seven saves in goal for the Retrievers.

 

ONTO THE NEXT ONE

The Retrievers return to the field on Friday, Sept. 13 as they head to Pennsylvania to face the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. The game is set to kick off at 6 p.m.
