Weather Forces Women's Soccer's Season Opener Against NJIT to End in 0-0 Draw

NEWARK, N.J. - After a weather delay on Thursday night, the UMBC women's soccer team's season opener against the NJIT Highlanders was called in the 104th minute, ending in 0-0 draws.

STRAIGHT FACTS

The first half started off as Elysia Paolillo (Holliston, Mass.) sent a shot wide of the net in the third minute.

NJIT put two shots towards the net, sending both off target, before taking their first corner of the game at the 29:31 mark.

New Jersey-natives Christina Corbi (Medford, N.J.) and Juliana Rafaniello (Red Bank, N.J.) sent back-to-back shots towards the net, but both went wide.

The Highlanders took three more corners in the first half, with one coming close to landing inside the goal as the Highlanders were able to rebound the shot, but it landed wide of the net.

NJIT ended the first half by putting another shot on goal, with Jade Wilkins (Stoney Beach, Md./The Catholic High School) making the only save in the first 45 minutes.

The Highlanders looked to score early in the second half, but Alyssa Minnick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made a save to keep them out of the net.

Corbi sent two shots towards the net in the 65th minute, but both fell off target.

Nikki Saad (Hummelstown, Pa.) gave the Retrievers a chance to get on board in the 75th minute but NJIT made the save.

The second half ended with a few shots by both teams as the game went into the first overtime.

UMBC took all three shots in the first OT as Corbi and Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) had two shots saved; Stevenson also had a shot blocked in the first 10-minute block.

The second OT was cut short with 6:47 remaining in the period.

BY THE NUMBERS

11 – The Retrievers outshot the Highlanders, 11-6.

7 – NJIT took seven corner kicks to UMBC's two.

5 – Five Retrievers made their debut in the Black and Gold in tonight's contest (Minnick, Caroline Koutsos, Teal Kilbride, Rafaniello, and Kara Poole); Corbi led the team with five shots on the night, one being on target.

2 – Stevenson and Saad each took two shots with one being on goal.

MINDING THE NET

Minnick played 58:13 in her collegiate debut, making one save. Wilkins started the first half the of the game and also made one save.

For NJIT, Molly Saylor made her NJIT debut and made three saves in the draw.

ONTO THE NEXT ONE

The Retrievers return to Baltimore on Sunday, August 25 as they face Saint Francis in their home opener at Retriever Soccer Park. The game is slated to kickoff at 2 p.m.
