Norman, Okla. -- The UMBC Softball team saw its storybook season come to a close after going toe-to-toe with ACC power Notre Dame (37-17), but falling 2-0 in the Norman Regional elimination game on Saturday night.

UMBC (30-24) finishes the season with an 18-win improvement over last season's 12-win campaign and its first winning season since 2014, also its last 30-win season. The Retrievers will return all nine starters from its America East Championship winning squad.

Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) paced the offense by reaching base twice, once on a single and then drawing a walk, and also made a great jumping catch of a liner to end a threat in the seventh inning. Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.), Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) and Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Md.) also had hits for UMBC.

Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) allowed just two earned runs in 5.2 innings, while Gillian McCarthy (Northfield, N.J.) had a scoreless relief appearance for the second straight day. Coppersmith finishes the season with a UMBC freshman record 21 wins, a program record 346 strikeouts and a dazzling 1.97 ERA.

Seniors Jenna Stupey (Edmonds, Wash.) and Mallory Pollack (Ivyland, Pa.) both made great defensive plays in their final game in the black and gold.
