McCarthy Named America East Rookie of the Week; Softball Hosts Stony Brook on Wednesday

Freshman pitcher Gillian McCarthy (Northfield, N.J.) was named America East Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday morning. The lefty threw her first career no-hitter and picked up two wins as the Retrievers (23-18, 4-7 AE) swept host Maryland Eastern Shore, 13-0 (5) and 5-3 last Tuesday. She allowed just three hits and one earned run in 11 innings pitched on the day.

The UMBC Softball team welcomes America East rival Stony Brook for a single game on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The game will conclude the three game season series that Seawolves took the first two games of by identical 2-1 scores on Long Island two weeks ago.

Scouting Stony Brook (22-15, 6-5 AE):

The Seawolves stepped out of America East play last week, with four games against non-conference opponents, and winning three of them. They won single home games on Tuesday and Wednesday against Seton Hall (6-0) and LIU Brooklyn (4-1), respectively. They then split a Saturday doubleheader at Lehigh, dropping the first game 2-1, before winning the nightcap, 3-0.

Freshman Shelbi Denman was named America East Pitcher of the Week after hurling a pair of complete game shutouts. The Las Vegas native struck out seven over 14 innings in the wins and improved to 9-3 with a 2.06 ERA on the season.

Katelyn Corr and Melissa Rahrich lead the SBU offense with .400 and .390 averages, respectively. Rahrich leads the conference in homers (11) and RBI (44), while Corr tops the league in runs scored (38) and is second in on-base percentage (.522).

Rahrich also anchors the Seawolves rotation with a team-high 21 starts with a 10-11 record and a 2.57 ERA. She has thrown 18 complete games, struck out 92 and walked 29.
