Stony Brook, N.Y.-- Junior Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Va) picked up three hits and a walk, but it wasn't enough as the UMBC Softball team dropped a pair of 2-1 heartbreakers at Stony Brook on Wednesday afternoon.

UMBC (19-14, 4-4 AE) got both its runs on the day via solo homers from Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) and Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio). Hammett walked in game one and went 3-for-3 with a double in game two. Stony Brook (18-12, 5-3 AE) used a one out triple and a sacrifice fly to walk-off in game one, while an unearned run in the fourth gave the Seawolves the lead for good in game two. The Retrievers left six runners on base in each game.

Both Gillian McCarthy (Northfield, N.J.) and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) took tough-luck losses in the circle. McCarthy went six innings, allowing just one earned run and walking one on just 91 pitches, while Coppersmith allowed just two earned runs on four hits while striking out three on 89 pitches in game one.

Kaly Winslow (Leesburg, Va.), Kennedy Lamb (Mexico, N.Y.), Pierce and Lonchar had the hits for the Retrievers in game one. Hammett picked up all three of her hits in game two, Winslow and Pierce had the other two hits.

UMBC returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Delaware State for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
