UMBC Track and Field Opens 2019-2020 Indoor Season at TCNJ Indoor Open on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC track and field kicks off the 2019-2020 indoor season at the TCNJ Indoor Open on Saturday up in New York. The meet will be held at the world-famous Amory Track in New York City. The Retrievers are coming off yet another strong 2018-19 campaign that saw a slew of Retrievers qualify for ECAC/IC4A Championships and many earn medals at the America East Championships.

Recap on Last Indoor Season:

-Kaya Knake led a trio of Retrievers in the 800m earning all-conference honors and winning a gold medal with a time of 2:07.91 at the America East Championships. Bridgett Redding and Briana Roberts went four-five in the race with times of 2:13.30 and 2:14.78 respectively. Knake, Redding, Roberts, and Morgan Casey them teamed up to win gold in the 4x800m relay in a time of 9:09.40.

-Erin Patrice earned a pair of top-eight finishes, taking seventh in the 60m finals (7.76) and sixth in the 200m (25.19). Tori Johnson and Ariella Garcia earned medals in the 500m dash with Johnson taking second in 1:15.21 and Garcia placing 6th in 1:17.04.

-Alexis Bartelloni and Morgan Casey also earned top finishes in the mile (11th, 5:12.80) and the 1,000m (6th, 2:57.48) respectively.

-Kelechi Nwanaga led the field athletes with a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 13.23m.

-UAlbany retained their crown, edging out UMass Lowell and Binghamton in second and third. Stony Brook, Vermont, UMBC, New Hampshire, Maine, Hartford rounded out the field.

-Alexios Prodanas earned gold with a toss of 20.57m. Fellow countryman Manos Kamtsiklis earned fourth place in the event with a toss to 18.07m. Also in the field, Rodney Sachiti and Trenson Terry finished fourth and seventh in the long jump. Sachiti had his best jump of 6.96m while Terry finished with a jump of 6.92m.

-Divinus Muteba earned silver in the high jump with a jump of 2.04m.

-Miles Smith led the runners with a bronze medal performance in the 800m with a time of 1:52.38. Isaiah Jensen and Taylor Baranoski also turned in top finishes in the 500m dash (4th, 1:04.43) and the mile (12th, 4:16.05) respectively. The 4x800m relay team of Baranoski, Jensen, Joe Viqueira and Smith finished fifth in a time of 7:45.66.

-The Great Danes recaptured their title on the men's side, edging out UMass Lowell and New Hampshire. Stony Brook, Binghamton, Vermont, UMBC, Maine and Hartford rounded out the field.

Up Next:

-The Retrievers will have the rest of December off before returning to the track at the Great Dane Classic on Saturday, January 11 in Staten Island, N.Y. at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
