Women's Soccer Falls in Thursday Night Contest to Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The UMBC women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to the Stony Brook Seawolves on Thursday, Oct. 3 to open the last month of regular season play.

STRAIGHT FACTS

Both teams started slowly in the first, with a combined six shots between the two squads. Christina Corbi (Medford, N.J.) had the only shots in the first 45 minutes for the Retrievers.

 

Jade Wilkins (Stoney Beach, Md./The Catholic High School) made two saves in the first half, helping to keep the score at 0-0 as the teams went into halftime.

 

Wilkins made another save in the early part of the second half before Caroline Koutsos (Boyds, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) tried to put UMBC on the board with her only shot of the game, but Stony Brook's goalkeeper made the save.

 

The Seawolves scored three goals in 1:04, starting with a penalty kick from Alyssa Francese at the 58:37 mark. At 59:04, Rachel Florenz scored off a pass from Chelsie DePonte; DePonte followed that up with a goal of her own 37 seconds later.

 

Francese added her second goal of the game at the 68:35 mark of the game.

 

Stony Brook put four more shots on goal, but Wilkins was there to make the saves.

 

FOR THE RECORD
Stony Brook moves to 8-4-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play. UMBC falls to 0-3-0 in America East play and 1-8-2 on the year.

 

BY THE NUMBERS

Stony Brook outshot UMBC, 23-4, including a 19-2 advantage in the second half. 

 

The Seawolves also held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. 

 

Corbi led the Retrievers with two shots on the night.

 

MINDING THE NET

Sophia Manner picked up her fifth clean sheet of the season after making one save. Wilkins made eight saves in net.

 

ONTO THE NEXT ONE

The Retrievers continue America East play as they head to UMass Lowell for a Sunday showdown with the River Hawks at 3 p.m.
