Women's Soccer Falls to Vermont, 1-0, on Sunday

BALTIMORE -  The UMBC women's soccer team fell to the Vermont Catamounts, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in the final event of #Homecoming2019.

 

STRAIGHT FACTS

The Catamounts took the first shot of the game in the 10th minute as Brooke Jenkins sent a shot center into the arms of Jade Wilkins (Stoney Beach, Md./The Catholic High School).

 

UMBC's first shot by Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) was sent wide right of the net in the 19th minute.

 

Wilkins made two more saves in the 23rd and 25th minute before Laura Ventura (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) sent another shot wide right.

 

Danielle Fuentes (Rockville, Md./Magruder) and Elysia Paolillo (Holliston, Mass.) each sent a shot on goal, but Vermont's Kacey Lambertson made the saves.

 

The second half started with a Vermont penalty kick in the 52nd minute, but Jenkins sent it wide left of the net.

 

Wilkins made another save to keep the game scoreless in the 65th minute.

 

Christina Corbi (Medford, N.J.) made UMBC's next two shots, each ending up high of the net.

 

In the 88th minute, Megan Connor (New Market, Md./Oakdale) and Stevenson put back-to-back shots on goal but Lambertson had two saves.

 

In the 89th minute, Christina Barry sent a pass into Alyssa Oviedo, who sent the ball into the left side of the net for the lone goal of the game.

 

FOR THE RECORD

Vermont moves to 3-7-2 on the year and 1-3-1 in America East play. UMBC falls to 1-11-2 overall and 0-5-0 in conference play.

 

BY THE NUMBERS

The teams were even in shots with 15 apiece. The Catamounts outshot the Retrievers, 12-6, in the first half; UMBC turned up the heat in the second half, taking nine shots to Vermont's three.

 

UMBC took six corner kicks to Vermont's three, including a 5-0 advantage in the second half.

 

Ventura led the Retrievers with four shots on the day.

Lambertson posted her second clean sheet of the season after making six saves in net. Wilkins made four saves in

 

ONTO THE NEXT ONE

The Retrievers will hit the road as they travel to Maine to face the Black Bears on Sunday, October 20. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m.
