Summers Drops 19 Points; UMBC Falls to Hartford 66-52

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC women's basketball dropped a 66-52 decision to visiting Hartford on Wednesday night despite a solid performance from Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.). The sophomore scored 19 points with nine rebounds in the loss.

UMBC drops their third straight to fall to 7-8, 0-2 AE on the year. Hartford improves to 9-7, 2-0 AE.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start, as it took nearly four minutes for either side to score. The Hawks would go on a 6-0 run to force an early UMBC timeout. However, the Retrievers would battle back, keeping the Hawk lead within three points the rest of the quarter, trailing 13-9 after one.

UMBC would strike early in the second, scoring five quick points capped by a Summers three to take the lead. Hartford would score on their next possession to retake the lead that sparked a 5-0 run midway through. The Hawks would lead by as many as seven points in the period, but the Retrievers would cut it down to one with under a minute left on a Summer layup. However, Hartford would make a layup to take a 28-25 lead at the break.

Summer paced the Retriever offense with seven first half points with junior Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va.) adding six.

The Hawks came out of the locker room on fire, ripping off an 11-4 run early on to take a double digit lead. From there, the Retrievers would use an 11-0 spurt to retake the lead after Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain) hit a jumper in the lane with a minute to go. Hartford would score on the next possession and would take a 44-41 lead into the final stanza.

Hartford pulled away from the Retrievers in the fourth, outscoring UMBC 22-11 in the quarter, defeating the Retrievers 66-52 on Wednesday.

Summers led all scorers with 19 points on 7-18 shooting with nine rebounds. Dominika Skrocka (Moscow, Russia) chipped in 10 points on 3-9 shooting from three. Freshman Kayla Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) added seven points and a team high 11 rebounds in the loss.

Lindsey Abed led three Hawks in double figures with 14 points. Sierra DaCosta and Alexis Douglas also hit double figures with 12 and 11 respectively.

UMBC will continue their home stand against UMass Lowell on Saturday, Jan. 12. Tip-off with the River Hawks is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
