Records Fall as Swimming and Diving Sweeps Howard on Senior Day

BALTIMORE - It was a day of celebration at UMBC Aquatic Complex as the UMBC swimming and diving team honored 19 graduating seniors before both teams swept Howard on Saturday, January 5; the men won by a score of 134-114 while the women won, 138-115.

 

The Retrievers also had plenty to celebrate in the pool as well, breaking five pool records during the course of the meet.

 

The women's 400 medley relay team of Emily Vance, Maddy Popalis, Natalija Marin, and Laura Massicotte toppled New Hampshire's record of 3:51.53, set back in 2005, after finished the race with a new time of 3:50.00.

 

The men's 400 medley relay team of Alexander Gliese, Luis Galvan, Jack Carlisle, and Ilia Rattsev touched in with a time of 3:22.35, shattering Binghamton's record of 3:26.33. Gliese also set a new pool record during the back split of the race in a time of 48.83, taking down Michael Phelps's 16-year-old NBAC record of 49.17.

 

In the final event of the day, the men's 200 free relay teams capped off the day much like it started. The team of Rattsev, Connor Ganley, Gliese, and Tiago Asakawa clocked in with a time of 1:23.43, breaking the pool record set by Gregor Sporlein, Lauri Kaei, Evan Carey, and Mohamed Hussein of 1:23.70. During the leadoff split of the relay, Rattsev also broke a pool record as he clocked in with a time of 20.39, knocking off Binghamton's Kaan Taylor's time of 20.41.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED - WOMEN

Hania Moro (New Cairo, Egypt) capped off her home career with three victories in the pool. The senior picked up wins in the 200 free (1:53.32), 500 free (5:04.21), and 1000 free (10:15.99).

 

Marin had two first-place finishes as she won the 50 fly in a time of 26.20 and the 100 fly in a time of 57.05.

 

Senior Natalie Davis (Austin, Texas) also picked up two victories on the day, winning the 100 back (59.05) and 200 IM (2:09.50). Junior Emily Vance (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) also had two wins, touching in first in the 50 free (24.38) and 50 back (26.29).

 

Massicotte (100 free, 52.40) and Popalis (50 breast, 30.43) eached picked up first-place finished during their senior meet.

 

On the boards, Devin Gromen (Crofton, Md./Arundel) finished first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 223.65.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED - MEN

Three Retrievers picked up two individual wins on the day. Gliese finished his UMBC home career with two wins, earning victories in the 50 back (23.26) and 100 back (49.82). Classmate Ganley followed with wins in the 50 breast (26.62) and 100 breast (57.82). Rattsev rounded out his day with victories in the 50 free (20.43) and 100 free (45.74).

 

Senior Ross Welsh (White House Station, N.J.) touched in first in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.73. Satori Dobbie (50 fly, 22.97,) Kai Wisner (500 free, 4:41.33), Jack Carlisle (100 fly, 51.28), Jimmy Dwyer (200 IM, 1:56.62) all earned individual wins as well.

 

On the boards, senior Elijah Wright (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) earned a first place finish in the 3-meter dive with a score of 327.37. Junior Ben Parker (Lawrenceville, Ga.) took the win in the 1-meter dive with a score of 307.95.

 

UP NEXT

The Retrievers will head to their final meet of the season on Saturday, January 19 when they take on East Carolina.
