Keffler and Alexander Combine for Five Hits as Softball Drops Regular Season Finale in Extra Innings at Stony Brook

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. -- Freshman Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) went 3-for-4, while senior Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va.) continued her hot streak, getting two hits, two stolen bases a walk and a run, but it wasn't enough as the UMBC Softball team dropped a 3-2, nine-inning, heartbreaker at Stony Brook on Wednesday afternoon. This was the final regular season game for the Retrievers, as they have a bye weekend before heading to Binghamton for the America East Tournament, which begins next Wednesday.

UMBC (12-29, 7-10) got off to a quick start when Alexander began the game with a walk, stole second and then scored on a Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md.) two-out single to put the visitors up 1-0. Stony Brook (21-19, 8-6) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first off of starter Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J.), but neither team could get much going on offense as Brianna Baker (Waldorf, Md.) entered in the second inning and matched zeros with Seawolves' starter Melissa Rahrich.

The Retrievers finally broke through and tied the game in the top of the seventh after Toni Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa.) and Keffler started the frame with back-to-back singles to chase Rahrich. Alexander would greet the new pitcher with an infield single to load the bases, and after a fielder's choice got an out at the plate, sophomore Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) would beat out a double play ball to score the tying run. Baker would then strand the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras, where the hosts would eventually prevail on a two-out double in the ninth.

A schedule and seedings for the America East Tournament will be announced later this week.
