Dawson and Keffler Help UMBC Secure First Victory Over Binghamton Since 2011 in Saturday Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Binghamton, N.Y. -- Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md.) homered and was one of three players who drove in two runs as UMBC scored eight runs in three innings and pulled out an 8-6 victory over Binghamton in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday, earning a split in the America East twin bill.

Binghamton (8-14, 1-1) had won 22 consecutive games over UMBC, dating back to 2011. That included a 6-3 victory for the Bearcats in the first game of the doubleheader.

UMBC managed only three hits in that contest and scored all three runs in the sixth after falling behind, 5-0. Haley DeLany (Lederach, Pa.) hit a two-run homer, and the Retrievers (7-22, 2-3) added one more run on an error but couldn't catch up.

They fared better in the second game. Dawson's two-run homer gave them a 2-0 lead in the top of the third before Binghamton scored three in the bottom half.

UMBC answered back with four in the top of the fourth and took the lead for good. Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) put the Retrievers up, 4-3, with a two-run single. Two batters later, Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md.) drove in two with a double to make it 6-3.

The Bearcats cut it to 6-4 before UMBC answered with two more in the fifth when Tori Alexander (Woddbridge, Va.) scored on an error, and Maddie Daigneau (New River, Az.) lined an RBI single to left.

Binghamton got two back in the fifth but the Retrievers held on for the win. Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J.) went the distance and scattered 10 hits, getting the decision in both games.

The Retrievers will look to tack the rubber match tomorrow at noon.
